As a Vincentian artist, I’ve walked beneath the towering spires of Kingstown’s cathedrals my whole life — not just as places of worship, but as pyramids of colonizers. These churches, with all their stone and stained glass, were never just about faith. They were about power. Presence. Control.
In Facades of Faith, I explore these monuments not as sacred neutral spaces, but as architecture of empire — built to dominate both spiritually and physically. Kingstown, with its wild number of churches per square kilometer, could rival the Vatican. But our story is different. These buildings rose alongside slavery, indentureship, and erasure.
Still, they’re part of us. The skyline wouldn’t be the same without them. They are beautiful — and they are burdened.
I used acrylic, watercolour, pastels, and textured mediums to create a surface that feels like weathered stone — cracked, conflicted, enduring. This isn’t just a painting. It’s a reckoning. A remix. A meditation on what we’ve inherited, what we hold onto, and what we choose to remember.
